tired of feeling like no matter what you try on the drums, nothing seems to come out in your playing?

What's the major issue with drum instruction up to this point?

say it with me:

Go away, practice these books, these rudiments, these coordination exercises, these independence exercises...

then, somehow, magically, by osmosis...

...they're supposed to come out in your playing.

But it's been years. And you still feel the same when you try to play a fill or a solo.

Not to mention, even when you're grooving with a song, you feel...limited.

Like you're walking on a narrow suspension bridge, and you don't want to take too big a step, because you might fall.

And maybe you've tried some of the big membership sites, many of whom are my friends. And there are great drummers there, and a lot of that stuff is great when you're getting started, but when you really want to break through into being a GOOD drummer, you can feel like you're spinning your wheels.

Well, the conventional drum instruction stuff is failing you for 3 primary reasons:

why conventional drum instruction isn’t helping

First, it's not specific enough to what you want to do.

You wouldn't practice break dancing steps to get better at tennis…

…so why are you practicing super abstract stuff that bears NO resemblance to anything you'd want to play in real life, thinking that somehow...magically...

SECOND, even if it were, you're never practicing improvising with it.

When you get on a gig do you play a memorized part note-for-note?

No - you make up the flow of the beat, the fills, everything. even within the boom chick, you're improvising with where you put the kick, when you open the hats. Let alone when you go to do a fill, if you don't want to just do the same fill you've memorized. You KNOW this stuff.

But most drum instruction treats it like you don't have to practice improvising; it'll just magically...

Before we get to number 3, let's pause, and talk about how I'm going to help.

The 8020 academy

My entire course library, for one low annual price! That's how!

Over $1200 worth of current courses, plus every new self-directed course I release, all included for less than the price of a cappuccino per week, when you pay annually.

And what do all these courses have in common?

The 8020 method. It means getting more results from less work, but targeting the specific things that are most likely to produce results.

And to break through to the next level on drums, that's two things:

SPECIFIC stuff, that leads into what you actually want to play.

Which means if you want to play fills…

...you start by practicing kernels of this stuff.

Kernels that are simple enough to learn, but are a piece of the final puzzle.

Then you make bigger and bigger "chunks", until you have a whole language in your muscle memory.

NEXT, by practicing improvising with the concepts as soon as possible.

That means if you've got a paradiddle, you're not just riffing paradiddles.

You're interchanging them with something else, so even while you're refining your subtleties, you're also injecting a little improvisation.

Then we add a little more, and a little more.

That's how, by the time you go to play an idea on the drums, it doesn't feel like you've memorized something specific. It feels like you're speaking your own ideas through the drums.

And good thing I've got courses on all these individual subjects:

what’s included in the 8020 academy (so far)

The Groove Course ($197) - Stop "trying harder" to groove, and learn to improve your perception of when something's grooving or not, so you can't help but groove.

The Jazz Course ($197) - Master the things that are going to make you "jam session ready" at jazz; not just somebody who sounds like they're playing exercises out of books.

The Solo Course ($197) - Improvise things that sound like you wrote them down and practiced them, except you're coming up with them off the top of your head.

The Practice Course ($197) - Master the system I use to make as much progress in one hour of practice as I used to waste half a day getting.

The Performance Course ($197) - Conquer performance anxiety by changing the root assumptions that cause it - namely that you have to sound better than you do. But a lot more about that too.

And the Coaching Course ($197) - The exact 3 to six month curriculum I practiced to go from "meh", to the player I am today.

That’s $1200 worth of courses.

And that’s just the beginning. For the past few years I’ve introduced at least a new course a year, and for members of the Academy, these courses will be included for no additional charge.

what makes the 8020 academy different

But a lot of people have course libraries.

And a few GOOD people have course libraries.

If you're watching this, it's because maybe you resonate with the "8020 method", in which case good...

...but you could still have all of this under your fingers, and not make much progress.

Which brings us to the third reason the conventional drum education stuff is failing you. Remember when I said there were 3?

Reason 3 - you don't know what to listen for

Imagine trying to style your hair or see if your clothes looked good, and mirrors don't exist. Or photos. You'd kind of be flying blind.

But that's what it's like completely "going it alone" through a lot of this online material. Sure, I think my exercises are great. And I have a lot of material showing you what to listen for. But that's no substitute for another set of ears. And, as I write this, and this won't be forever, but as I write this, those ears are mine.

Because when you join the 8020 Academy Pilot…

...you'll get the gift of a bunch of your time back, because you won't be wasting it going the wrong direction, or not hearing how you really sound, or not knowing which aspects of the exercises to "perfect" and which are good enough.

Because you'll get Personalized feedback from me, on any 5-minute-or-less video you submit, 4 times-a-year, including immediately after you join.
